Rule 6

tread lightly

You’ve got horsepower. Use judgment to match.

Montana’s trails, roads and waterways don’t stay open and beautiful on their own.

If you ride here — dirt bikes, ATVs, side-by-sides, sleds, whatever you’ve got — it’s on you to know how to do it right. Access isn’t guaranteed. But if we all ride with a little respect, we keep these places open for the long haul.

Here's the short version: stay on the trail.

Ride where you’re allowed. Don’t cut corners, tear up fragile terrain or rip through streams like it’s a Red Bull commercial. Pick up your trash. Respect the signage. Give other users space. And remember — just because your rig can go somewhere doesn’t mean it should.

These principles are the real deal.

We’re proud partners with Tread Lightly, an organization that’s been teaching motorized users how to recreate responsibly for decades. Their T.R.E.A.D. principles are the real deal — easy to learn, easy to practice, and designed to help you enjoy the ride without wrecking it for everyone else.

Being responsible doesn’t mean being boring.

It means you still get to do this next year. So, take the Tread Lightly 101 course. Learn what applies to your vehicle and your sport. And then actually follow it.

Your gear doesn’t give you a pass.

Choose your activity and learn how to do it right. Bad riding gets trails closed. You represent the motorized community out here. Ride like you care — and don’t screw it up for the rest of us.
